Smith *$Park Director JF*'ÝPREFACE This report is a summary of the year's activities, as well as goals for the Big Game Reserve of Lone Pine National Park for 1988. *'ÝPermits Herd Count During the 1987 Hunting season the Lone Pine Game Reserve offered permits for the taking of Deer, Elk, Antelope, Buffalo, Rocky Mountain Goat, and Bighorn Sheep. A count of all herds as of 31 December 1987 revealed the current numbers of big game: *#Big Game Census Antelope. . . . . . . . . . . . . .145 Big Horn Sheep. . . . . . . . . . .250 Buffalo. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 467 Deer. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1,569 Elk. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 334 Rocky Mountain Goat. . . . . . . . .98 Hunting Hours The hunting hours were continued as per recommendation of the 1986 program improvement proposal (ANPI83LPNP): *$Hunting Hours Antelope. . . . . . . . .8 a.m. to dusk Big Horn Sheep. . . . . .7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Buffalo. . . . . . . . . 12 p.m. to dusk Deer. . . . . . . . . . .daylight hours Elk. . . . . . . . . . . 8 a.m. to dusk Rocky Mountain Goat. . . 12 p.m. to 12:01 p.m. P Tags The Big Game Permits were issued by lottery, bid, and onceinalifetime priorities. All permits were monitored by the Checking Stations during the 1984 hunts. 1. Tags were removed by the Checking Stations and returned to the Ranger Station Headquarters.F 2. Any permits not accounted by receipt of tags were contacted by mail through Ranger Station Headquarters.F The following table reflects the average number of tags taken daily at each checking station for the 1984 season: *$Big Game Tags Station #1. . . . . . . . . . .5 Station #2. . . . . . . . . . .12 Station #3. . . . . . . . . . .3 Station #4. . . . . . . . . . .15 Station #5. . . . . . . . . . .9 8 *#ÝBig Game Hunts Conservation Measures According the 1986 proposal the Game Reserve would conserve the Big Game resources by reducing the number of permits available in 1987. The permits were cut by 20% for the 1987 hunting season by raising the legal age for hunters of big game. No hunting license (except for Rocky Mountain Goat) was issued to any resident under the age of twenty-one (21) according to the State Big Game Proclamation. Number Taken The following is a graph of the numbers of big game legally taken during the 1986 and 1987 seasons: *$Big Game Hunt F \ Numbers Legend | === 1986 100 | *** 1987 | 90 | === | === 80 | === === | === === 70 | === *** === | === *** === *** 60 | === *** === *** === | === *** === *** === 50 | === *** === *** === | === *** === *** === === 40 | === *** === *** === *** === | === *** === *** === *** === === 30 | === *** === *** === *** === === | === *** === *** === *** === *** === *** 20 | === *** === *** === *** === *** === *** -------------------------------------------------------- Type Deer Elk Antelope Buffalo Big Horn Sheep \F^ *ÝHunter Education Program The steps for obtaining Big Game Permits under this program are as follows: 1. Attend ten hours of instructions over a five week period.F 2. No license will be given until the course is completed.F 3. A Blue Card will be issued upon completion of the course.F 4. The card does not need to be on the hunter's person while in the field; it need only be presented when receiving the game permit.F 5. Any violation of the regulation will mean automatic forfeiture of the card (except in "Krivosi Heights").F The goals and improvements for the 1988-89 hunts are given in detail in the Program Improvements Report. 6 *'ÝSummary Because of increased revenues during 1987, due largely to Big Game Permits, the park was able to meet most of its outstanding obligations. However, the donated funds mentioned in the proposal are needed to complete the 1988-89 projects. CDELone Pine National Park *ÝChristmas Tree Harvest - 1986 There are several varieties of evergreen trees which can be harvested. They are not hard to tell apart as the leaves (needles) and cones are usually quite different: ”Pines - Needles gathered together at the base in bunches of one to five in a little sheath that often wears off after the first year.@ ”Spruces - Needles scattered over the twigs singly, less than an inch long. Cones have thick woody scales.@ ”Juniper or Cedar - Needles reduced to little green scales on the twigs, cones reduced to small bluish berries.@ It is essential that anyone cutting Christmas trees for personal or commercial use be able to identify the trees that can be legally harvested. WordPerfect supports different features on various printers, depending on the printer's capabilities. For example, this paragraph should be right justified, and will print bi-directionally on some printers. ˝Some printers will do proportional spacing by simply adding an asterisk after the pitch change (Pitch - 10*). This should be printed proportional in font 1 with right justification on. (Boldface) This line of text is bolded and should continue bolded following a carriage return. (Underlined) This line of text should be underlined. This line combines Bolding and Underlining. Overstrikes: =/ a^ -~ for foreign characters and math symbols. Super (superscripts) and Sub (subscripts) Half lines up and half lines down are done by some printers. ڔContinuous Double underlining Your printer may not ڔNon-Continuous Double underlining have double underlining. ڔContinuous Single underlining ڔNon-Continuous Single underlining K&(This is flush with the right margin) This is a short paragraph to illustrate 8 lines of text per inch. Most printers can make this change anywhere in a document and then continue back into 6 LPI, as we do right here. This is 12 pitch in font 1 starting at column 10. Column 10 in 12 pitch is to the left of column 10 in 10 pitch. This is 15 pitch in font 1. If your printer has been defined for 15 pitch, (or 16.5 or 17 or condensed), this will be still further to the left than column 10 in 12 pitch. This is Font 1. Font 1 should be NLQ, (Near Letter Quality). This is Font 2. Usually draft. This is Font 3. Proportional if your printer does it. This is Font 4. Fonts 4 through 8 This is Font 5. will do condensed, This is Font 6. expanded, italics, This is Font 7. and foreign fonts, This is Font 8. depending on your printer. Some fonts look better when printed in a pitch other than 10 pitch, (ie. 5 pitch, 12 pitch, 15 pitch). Adjust these values until the characters appear at a spacing that you like best. If you are creating a new Proportional Spacing table note that all entries should be in 13 pitch (i.e. average width of 9).
